In the winter of 2016 I sadly lost two of my best friends; my beloved Dalmatians Traveler and Shadow. Suddenly my fiancé Rashelle and I found ourselves with some free time and so decided to volunteer at our local animal shelter, the Cochrane & Area Humane Society. After volunteering for a few months, we decided to pitch an idea of how to gain more exposure for the long-term residents at the shelter. Our vision was to spend the day with a shelter dog hiking, kayaking or paddle boarding and photograph them on their adventure. This book showcases how showing the dogs in a different light can help dogs get adopted. As a result of our success a group of dedicated volunteers and staff members have developed a similar outdoor program for adoptable dogs called Hiking with Hounds. The program has a high success rate for helping dogs get exposure with the help of photography and social media platforms. I hope this collection of images will inspire you to volunteer at your local shelter.
